Finnish National AirTango Competition Rules

Air tango is danced alone with an imaginary partner. The style is free, but it should express tango as it is personally experienced. The absolute rule is that no contact may be made with any other living person during the dance (accidental collisions excluded). This competition can only be won once in a lifetime. The winner is chosen by the audience.

Entry to the Finnish Championship competition takes place at the venue. There is no entry fee or dress code for the competition (there is an entrance fee to Tangokatu).

World Championship Competition Rules

The rules of the World Championships are otherwise the same, but the competition has a prestigious panel of judges, and the event’s prestige is also honored by dressing in tango style. Previous years’ winners, international competitors, and the finalists of the Finnish Championships are all eligible to participate in the competition.

Jury

The FCS jury consists of winners from previous years, who select the contestants that advance. Since the people know best, the winner is chosen by audience shout voting.

The WCS jury includes prominent figures from different fields of art. In 2026, the jury consisted of the 2023 Tango Queen Charlotta Saari, music mogul and cantor Asko Luomala, as well as crime novelist and lyricist Kale Puonti. Dance teacher Clara Blomqvist was also on the jury, and the fifth member of the jury was the audience shout.
