AirTango’s anniversary year competitions
In 2026, AirTango will already be celebrating its 20th anniversary. In honor of this jubilee year, in addition to the annual Finnish Championships, the World Championships will also be held at the birthplace of the dance, in connection with the Seinäjoki Tango Festival. The competition is open to everyone, both participants and spectators alike, welcome!
AirTango´´ s history
Ilmatango-AirTango was created by Oulu-based event mogul Sami "Simisami" Alasimi in 2005. The Tangomarkkinat festival asked Sami for “something new and fun” for the program. At the time, the Finnish Air Guitar Championships were all the rage in Finland. That is where the idea was born. This entertaining, crowd-pleasing competition immediately gained great popularity. Every year, the Finnish Air Tango Championships are held in Seinäjoki in connection with the Tangomarkkinat. One of the qualifying locations for the competition is Playa del Inglés in the Canary Islands. In 2025, the Tango Tour traveled from Helsinki to Rovaniemi to organize five regional championship events. In 2026, in honor of the anniversary year, the first World Championships in the sport will be held.
